A Culinary Adventure at Bizikletak

October 12, 2016

Blink and you’d almost miss small and unassuming Bizikletak, nestled away in Chamberí. The pared-back café-style interior of this exciting new Madrid restaurant conveys a casualness – but the food is anything but casual. Think delicious modern tapas-style tasting menu, all at a snip of what you would expect to pay given the excellent quality.

Chefs Ainoa and Issac met 15 years ago, and Bizikletak is the fruit of their 15-year friendship, combined with experience and passion for food.  This passion is most apparent in the menu – which focuses on really fresh, locally-sourced produce. The beautifully-presented creations (more on that later) have accessible prices, all at around €5, to establish a loyal, local following.

Bizarrely, you won’t find a stove in the restaurant – dishes are prepared by use of an oven, including a bain marie, or are simply served raw. Fresher-than-fresh food is a guarantee, and Bizikletak’s innovative and exciting flavour combinations make it stand out from the more traditional Madrid restaurant offering.

the new Madrid restaurant and its food…

Now for those mouth-watering details. First to the table came little mini toasts, served with pungent deep yellow olive oil and Idiazabal Basque cheese and herbs.  Then, delicious ‘Huevo Trufada’ (poached egg, with crunchy onion, and creamy potato and truffle sauce), arrived in a cute mini-casserole dish.  A zingy, light ‘Ensalda de Bacalao Ahumado’ revealed melt in the mouth cod accompanied by slices of caramelized orange creating a taste of both salt and sweet. Next came ‘Pulpo con mojo de cilantro’ (perfectly cooked Octopus, with a punchy coriander dressing and creamy sweet potato) and the intriguing, super-fresh and delicately smoked Steak Tartar with ginger, which came contained in a smoke-filled glass dome.  Each of these dishes were a unique and exciting combination of flavours, a welcome contrast to more traditional Spanish food in Madrid. We finished with a glorious ‘recuerdo de chocolate’ – a chocolate ganache laced with olive oil, salt and baby Basil leaves – the perfect finale to our mini culinary adventure.
